Tofu Pudding-$3 "The authentic flavor that will remind you home!"

Douhua (Chinese: 豆花, dòuhuā) is a Chinese dessert made with very soft tofu (made of soy bean). It is also referred to as tofu pudding and soybean pudding.

Normally we'll add in sugar or ginger water and ingredients such as peanuts, red/green beans, pearls and taro with tofu pudding. In summer, you can have tofu pudding with shaved ice; in winter, you can have it with ginger soup. It's the best comfort dessert no matter what the season is. I used to have tofu pudding everyday after class. I'm glad to know that there's a place that sells authentic tofu pudding in Flushing. The place is kind of small. It's not famous, but if you come from Taiwan, you'll know where you can find the taste that you're familiar with.

Address: 135-26 Roosevelt Avenue. Flushing
Price: $3-$6

Fujian cuisine-$10 "My special experiences with Fujian cuisine!"

Fujian cuisine is one of the native Chinese cuisines derived from the native cooking style of Fujian province, China. Fujian-style cuisine is known to be light, soft, and tender, with particular emphasis on umami taste, known in Chinese cooking as "xianwei" (simplified Chinese: 鲜味), as well as retaining the original flavor of the main ingredients instead of masking them.
Many diverse seafoods and woodland delicacies are used, including a myriad of fish, shellfish and turtles, or such edible mushrooms and bamboo shoots, provided by the coastal and mountainous regions of Fujian. The most commonly employed cooking techniques in the region's cuisine include braising, stewing, steaming and boiling. (Wikipedia)

Chinese dishes can be very different in different regions. Even though I'm from Taiwan, having authentic Fujian cuisine was a really special experience for me. One of my friends took me to the traditional Fujian restaurant to try their authentic dishes. The picture above is their favorite dish-pickled crab! I have to admit that I never have crabs when they are still...green! The taste was not bad, it was very fresh and I felt like I could almost taste the the river, haha.

This was another dish that really surprised me. On the menu it was called fish soup, but when it was served, I was so surprised! Though it was called the fish soup, the ingredients in there were not fish, they were pig skin with this jelly texture! My friends couldn't explain why is that. They said that they are just used it. I was shocked that the name and the food were so different! Anyway, the taste was not bad.

This was the restaurant where I tried my first Fujian cuisine. I'm introducing this two dishes because they are special and some how different from what I've had before. The restaurant also have a lot of dishes that are general, tasty and cheap!

Mini Shabu Shabu-$10 "A must-try in winter!"

Shabu-shabu (しゃぶしゃぶ , also spelled shyabu-shyabu) is a Japanese dish featuring thinly sliced beef boiled in water. The term is anonomatopœia, derived from the sound emitted when the ingredients are stirred in the cooking pot. (Wikipedia)

Basically shabu shabu is a smaller version of hot pot. Asian love hot pot. In our culture, sitting around a big table and sharing food together represents similarity and reunion. So what is hot pot? Hot pot is a pot of spoiled soup and people will put food including meat, vegetables, tofu, mushrooms, taro and all kinds of ingredients that are made for hot pot in the spoiled water. Normally it take about 1-2 hours for having hot pot. People eat and chat with family and friends. Having hot pot is a great time for us. It's not just about the food, it's more about the people.

Malaysian Cuisine-$5 "Try the famous dish-Bak kut teh!"

Bak-kut-teh (肉骨茶)  is a Chinese soup popularly served in Malaysia, Singapore and also, neighbouring areas like Riau Islands and Southern Thailand. The name literally translates as "meat bone tea", and at its simplest, consists of meaty pork ribs simmered in a complex broth of herbs and spices (including star anise, cinnamon, cloves, dang gui, fennel seeds and garlic) for hours. Despite its name, there is in fact no tea in the dish itself; the name refers to a strong oolong Chinese tea which is usually served alongside the soup in the belief that it dilutes or dissolves the copious amount of fat consumed in this pork-laden dish.

Bak kut teh is usually eaten with rice or noodles (sometimes as a noodle soup), and often served with youtiao (油條) for dipping into the soup. Soy sauce is preferred as a condiment, with which chopped chili and minced garlic is taken together. Bak kut teh is typically a famous morning meal. The Indian bread is also my favorite. The crispy bread with the curry sauce is a perfect match! It only costs you $3. Also you have to try their Hainan chicken. You would love the tender chicken with the hot chili sauce.

White Bear-$3 "The cheapest food you can get in Flushing!"

You must try wonton with hot sauce at White Bear. How could you not try it when  8 wontons only cost you $3.25

Wontons are made by spreading a square wrapper (a dough skin made of floureggwater, and salt) flat in the palm of one's hand, placing a small amount of filling in the center, and sealing the wonton into the desired shape by compressing the wrapper's edges together with the fingers. The most common filling is ground pork with a small amount of flour added as a binder. The mixture is seasoned with salt, spices, and often garlicor finely chopped green onion. (From Wikipedia)

Wontons can be cooked in many different ways. You can have wontons with noodles soup or have them fried. I like the wontons with hot sauce the most because hot sauce can intensify the flavor of the juicy pork. And I just love it!

Biang Baing Spicy Lamb Noodles-$7 "How can you miss it if you love spicy food?"

Biang! It's an interesting restaurant name isn't it? It's an onomatopoeia of the sound that noodles make when they are being pulled and slammed against a work surface! X'an cuisine is famous for their spices. All the dishes are spicy, sour and fulled of hot peppers. But don't worry if you're not a spicy food lover, you can definitely ask servers to adjust the level of spice.

I tried their famous dish spicy cumin lamb biang-biang noodles. The hot chili and the spice worked well with the strong flavor of the tender lamp. The flavor was unforgettable. Even though I'm not a spicy food lover, I'm sure this will not be my last time visiting the restaurant. If you love noodles like I do,please try it and you'll definitely love it!

The restaurant has been introduced by many media including cooking channelTime Out NYNew York Times, New York Magazine...etc. The foods are traditional but the restaurant's decorations and their services are trendy. It's a good place for you to experience the young and chic Chinese culture.

Don't forget to try their skewers. You can try either lamp, beef or chicken. Love their spices! I can finish three skewers at once, haha.

Steam pork buns are one of my favorite Chinese cuisine. Some people like to eat plain pork buns, but I love to dip the buns with soy sauce. And I'll add in a little bit ginger and vinegar to enhance the flavor of pork soup. It only costs you $5.5 for six steam pork buns! It's cheap and delicious! Watch this video and you'll know why it is one of the famous Chinese dishes! Trust me, you need to try it.

Chinese Hunan Cuisine-$10 "Especially for Spicy Food Lovers!"

To be honest, this was my first time trying Chinese Hunan cuisine! I'm not good at eating spicy food, but I really love the flavor of the dishes that we ordered. The dishes were not that spicy so it intensified the flavor of the dishes without losing the taste of the ingredients. The picture above is my favorite. It called "干鍋肥腸". It's made of pig intestine, peppers, ginger, mushrooms and some spice. This dish is around $15.

This dish is called "蘿蔔乾臘肉". It's made of salted turnip, peppers, scallion, salted pork, and chili. You can eat a lot of white rice with this salted pork. It's crunchy, spicy, salty, and irresistible. The dish is around $12.

This is one of the famous dishes of  Hunan cuisine.
"鹹蛋黃蒸茄子". It's made of egg plant, scallion, pork and egg yolk. I like the flavor of egg plant with egg yolk. It was a perfect combination. This dish is around $12.

Finally it's the soup! Normally we'll have two or three main dishes and one soup for traditional Chinese/Taiwanese dinner. This dish is called "酸菜魚片湯". It's made of fish, mushrooms and pickled cabbage. It was nice to have this sour tasty soup after eating those spicy dishes. This dish is around $8.

I went to this restaurant in Flushing with three other girls. We ordered three main cuisine and one soup. It only cost us around $10/person! Don't forget to ask for iced water while eating the cuisine. Trust me, you'll need to drink a lot of water. But you'l definitely love it!
